Land Back Kennebec: an audio place play

Welcome to an audio place play created by In Kinship Collective in October 2023. It is made up of encounters in the watershed of the Kennebec River that you can have in any order, all together or separately, with others or alone.

Here you can see all the areas in the watershed where the audio play takes place. Think of it like a list of acts, but one where it’s okay for Act Two to come after Act Five. There are eight of these areas or acts, each marked by a dot. Upriver to downriver: Narantsouak, Skowhegan, Waterville, Belgrade, Augusta, Hallowell, Richmond, and the southernmost unlabeled dot is Quabacook in Merrymeeting Bay.

To help you navigate to these areas, there’s a Google map that you can access by scanning the labeled QR code on the righthand side of the map.

There’s also a code that navigates to the In Kinship Collective soundcloud page. Audio for each site is organized into a playlist that’s titled after the site. To see all of them, click the word “Playlists” from our soundcloud homepage. When you’re at a site, you can load up that playlist. Some have only a single, longer track; others have multiple tracks. Each listening experience is a bit different, each place has its own genre, its own dramaturgy. You can start--and finish--anywhere you choose.

After or along your journey, we would be excited to hear from you in connection with our efforts to support Wabanaki represencing in the Kennebec River watershed. The map has ways to find out more about us, or to get in touch with us. Send us tips, hellos, place names, sound recordings, stories, alterations, and questions at apelepeki@openwaters.org.

Wherever you are now, you’re at the start.

Here comes the prologue.
